Congratulations to Colin Grant the South East of Ireland O50’s singles champion. It’s great to have players of this level within the club. Well done Colin.

Easter Cup Final – Support Welcome!!!

Sandycove’s Easter Cup team came through a tough semi-final last Saturday morning at home against a stubborn Deerpark to make it through to this Friday’s final at 7pm in Blackrock LTC against Shankill.

Although Deerpark were the runners up of the other Group 2 League, they had won many of their matches well and had accumulated a high number of points. Again Sandycove had to call on a few subs to fill in with Pat Leamy and Fred O’Neill kindly obliging.

First up on the day were John Cronin and John Finnegan who unfortunately came up against a strong pairing and lost in two sets 1-6, 2-6.

Next up were our two subs Pat and Fred who quickly dispatched their opponents 6-3, 6-1 and gave Sandycove a glimmer of hope and a much needed boost.

That left it all down to the third deciding match with Peter McCann and Paul Sinnott. The first set was very close with Deerpark just pipping it 6-4. The second set continued in the same vein with games going with serve but Peter and Paul eventually managed to secure it 7-5. And so that left it all down to the third set decider. At this stage, the rest of the team had already eaten their sambos and cake and were watching from the balcony. Maybe it was the prospect of there being no cream cake left after their match but Peter and Paul started to get their act together and eventually after two hours play managed to prevail 6-2 to secure the match and the tie.

This Friday at 7pm Sandycove travel to Blackrock LTC to try and bring home the cup – all support is welcome to cheers on the lads. Sandycove are facing one of our previous group opponents, Shankill and although Sandycove beat them 2-1 in the group phase it was very close then and we expect that this will be another very tough battle.

Wishing the lads all the very best.

Paul and Greg
