After a tricky start to the campaign Week 2 proved to be far more successful. Four of our seven teams came out on top. Our 1st team recorded their first win by 2-1 against the students of DCU and are now chasing a place in the play-offs with Rob Neiland and Richie Morris having a good 6-4 6-4 win at No1 doubles. Harry Owens subbed up to partner Reon Ferreira and they played well but were edged out at No2 while Colin Grant subbed up with Oisin O’Hanlon and won comfortably at No3. Our 2nd team lost out 2-1 away to Wicklow 1sts. Many thanks to Conor O’Reilly, Fred O’Neill and Stephen O’Brien for subbing in to play Class 2. And well done to Ivan Brady and Kevin Nowlan who had a strong 6-1 6-1 win at No.1 doubles.
Our 3rd team lost out 3-0 with Roy Bailey and Louis Hemeryck again getting closest to a win when they were edged out in another high standard 3 setter. Thanks to Paul Ivory and David Widger for subbing. Our 4th team had a great 3-0 win away to Wicklow 2nds. It was largely a family affair with JP Begley winning with his father-in-law Dave Murphy at No.1 doubles while Sam Hanley and his father Dave had good wins with their partners Paul Kilduff and Frank McCooey at No2 and No3 doubles.
Our 5th team won again by 2-1 and now have 5 points so are leading their group and challenging for a place in the play-offs. All three pairings won tie-breaks in very tight matches with Shane Gill and Cormac Hurley doing particularly well to also come from a set down and win their match. The 6th team had another 2-1 win this week and are well placed in their group. All three games were marathon three set matches. Thanks to Simon Hugh-Jones for subbing in at No1 doubles and winning with Tim McNichols. Our 7th team are also in Class 6 but lost out 3-0 to Wicklow 3rds.
The very best of luck to everyone over the next three weeks.
