We had 6 men’s teams competing in Summer League this weekend and overall we had 3 teams winning their matches and all teams securing vital points. Many thanks to everyone involved in playing, organising and supporting.
Our 1sts were in battle on Friday evening at home against David Lloyd. Strong support from the balcony helped them to a 3-2 win. Rob Neiland played 1st singles and had an epic comeback to win 6-4 in the 3rd set reversing a straight sets defeat to the same opponent last year. Rory Curtis saved set points in both sets to win 7-5 7-5 in a high standard match while Oisin O’Hanlon and Reon Ferreira combined well at No 2 doubles and won in straight sets.
Our 2nd team lost 4-1 away to a very strong Naas 2nds team. Harry Owens subbed in and won in 3 sets at No.2 doubles.
Our 3rd team lost 3-2 away to De Vesci 1sts. Roy Bailey won in straight sets at No 2 singles and Paul and Will Fitzgerald had a comfortable win at No.1 doubles. David Murphy subbed in and was unluckily just edged out in two tight sets including the 1st set which finished 9-7 in a tiebreak.
Our 4ths lost 3-2 at home to Navan 1sts with Harry Wall taking a break from leaving cert studies to have a great 3 sets win at No.2 singles and Colin Wardlaw subbing in to win at No.3 singles.
Our 5ths were away to Mount Pleasant 4ths and got off to a great start with a 3-2 win. All the singles matches went to 3 sets with Tom O’Higgins winning at No.1 while his brother Cian and Steve McGoohan were just edged out in the other matches. Cian wore a heart monitor for the match and the results showed the incredible effort being put in! Both of our doubles pairings won comfortably – Sam Totterdell subbed in to partner Dermot Bennett while Gary Byrne won well with Tim McNichols.
Our 6th team also won 3-2 at home to Glenalbyn 2nds. Pat Leamy was ever reliable at No3 singles. Tony Collison and Wes Hudson won No 1 doubles while Liam Hurley subbed in to win at No2 doubles with Sam Hughes in his first ever senior league match. A fantastic achievement. His junior colleague Caoimhin Cronin was also playing his first ever senior league match at No.2 singles and put in a great performance winning the first set 6-3 but just lost out in 3 sets. This league campaign should be great experience for our junior players.
Next Friday (May 17th) our 1st team will be playing their Round 2 game at home at 7.30pm. This is a key match in their group against Blackrock 1sts so strong support from fellow members on the balcony would once again be really appreciated. The bar will be open as usual from 8pm.
Our 2nd team are at home on Saturday at 2pm and will be followed on court by our 3rds at 4pm. The 4ths, 5ths and 6ths are all playing away at 2pm on Saturday. All support welcome and the best of luck to everybody playing next weekend.
