Our men’s 1st team lost out in their Class 2 final against Templeogue 1sts in Clontarf. The opposition were ultimately too strong in the three men’s singles where all of their players had been awarded tennis scholarships to US colleges.

Despite our best efforts we came up short with Rory Curtis playing No.1 singles, myself at No.2 singles and Harry Owens at No. 3 singles. We won No. 2 doubles with Reon Ferreira and Will Fitzgerald combining well once again and Rob Neiland and Steve Gill were still on court at the start of a 3rd set at No.1 doubles.

It was a glorious day for all of the finals and there was a great turnout of support from Sandycove members who were clearly the more vocal on the balcony. We certainly won that match!

It was a great achievement to get to the final of Class 2. To put it into context Sandycove men’s teams have only won Class 2 on four occasions since it started in 1902. It is something that happens once in a generation and this team came within touching distance of achieving it. Everyone involved can take huge pride in that.

This concludes Summer League for 2019. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the players, team captains, subs, supporters, coaches, parents of junior players, and everyone else that contributed to making this such an enjoyable and competitive campaign.

Men’s Summer League Round-Up (addendum)

I omitted to mention in the previous email that there will be a men’s 1st team photo arranged one evening when Oisin O’Hanlon and Richie Morris both return from their travels. Both of these 1st team players were unfortunately unavailable for the final.

Details of this will follow in due course and there may also be some celebratory drinks associated with this with everyone welcome to join in.
