Once again three of our six teams competing won their matches this weekend. Many thanks to everyone playing and supporting all of our teams.
The 1sts were in action on Friday in front of a large crowd on the balcony against Blackrock 1sts and won impressively by 4-1. Rory Curtis won at No2 singles after the opponent retired, which was as much to do with superb play by Rory as an injury, Harry Owens had a great win at No 3 singles by 6-4 6-3, Richie Morris and Steve Gill won in straight sets at No 1 doubles and Reon Ferreira and Will Fitzgerald did likewise at No2 doubles. Rob Neiland played No1 singles but lost out in the 3rd set after a marathon game of really high quality.
Our 2nd team lost 3-2 at home to Fitzwilliam 3rds. Louis Hemeryck played outstanding tennis and showed great maturity for a junior player in winning No.2 singles 7-5 7-5. Sam Hanley’s intense practice and hunger paid off with a strong win at No.2 doubles against experienced opposition.
The 3rd team were always going to be up against it playing Castleknock’s 2nds and lost out 5-0. To our team’s credit all of the games were very competitive with Ken Browne and Paul Fitzgerald coming closest when they were just edged out 7-6 7-5 at No 1 doubles.
Our 4ths were missing all three of their singles players and were reliant on a great commitment by our subs Colin Wardlaw, Fred O’Neill and Ken Flanagan for the trip to Naas. Many thanks to them. The team ended up losing 5-0 with Conor O’Reilly and Jim O’Hanlon going closest when they lost 6-4 in the 3rd set.
The 5ths had another important win this weekend by 3-2 away to Clontarf 5ths. Tom O’Higgins had an excellent win in straight sets at No 1 singles and Steve McGoohan had another 3 set match this weekend and came out on top 6-3 in the final set in a real ‘Battle of Clontarf’. Tim McNichols and Gary Byrne won well in two sets at No.2 doubles.
Our 6ths also won again this weekend by 3-2 away to Monkstown 4ths. Pat Leamy made it all look straightforward winning again this weekend by 6-3 6-3 at No.3 singles. Tony Collison and Wes Hudson had a fantastic win by 6-4 6-7 7-5 at No 1 doubles with an extraordinary effort put in by Tony who injured his hamstring in the 2rd set. Sam Hughes and Liam Hurley had another fine win at No.2 doubles in a 3 set match.
This Friday our 2nd team will be playing at 7.30pm at home against Donnybrook 1sts in Class 2. All support is welcome for this and the bar will be open as usual at 8pm.
Next Saturday our 4ths have a home game at 2pm and support is also welcome for this match as well as for our other teams who are playing away next weekend. Best of luck to all.
Colin
