Congrats to our men’s 1st team who won their Class 2 quarter-final playoff match against Naas 2nds. The game was played in glorious sunshine with huge support from the packed balcony.
Rob Neiland won an early point when his opponent retired injured at 1-1 in the first set. The next point won was at No 2 doubles where Harry Owens and yours truly got off to a very slow start losing the first set 6-2 but recovered to win the next two sets 6-1 6-4. At that stage we were a set down at both No 3 singles and No 1 doubles and the second set in both matches was evenly poised. That left Rory Curtis on court at No 2 singles and he won the vital final point 6-1 7-5 in a game of brilliant quality.
Earlier in the week our men’s 5th team lost out in their promotion playoff match against Elm Park 3rds in Class 5. Tom O’Higgins was having a titanic struggle at No 1 singles and was 1-1 in the third set while Dave Hanley and Alan Warren were also in a really tight game at No 2 doubles but unfortunately the other 3 games did not go our way against stronger opposition. Huge credit to our 5th team on an excellent campaign.
The 1st team will be playing away against Shankill 1sts on Wednesday at 7.30pm in a Class 2 semi-final where the winner will be promoted to Class 1 next year. All support greatly appreciated.
Many thanks to all the subs who played in the playoffs this week and also to the hordes of supporters who made the balcony rock and created a wonderful club atmosphere.
