Ladies Winter League, final week

Our battle-hardened ladies go out to fight one last time this afternoon. We have been soaked, blinded and windblown to kingdom-come, but we have three teams still standing with a chance of making the playoffs.

Our Sandycove 5, Class 6 team makes the pilgrimage to Naas this afternoon, but the team stands a great chance of making it through if they can grab three points today. This is an extremely tight group, so best of luck to our girls, ably captained by Mairead Walsh, and to super sub Shelagh Cunningham who is very kindly making the trip to fight on our behalf.

Karen Johnson’s Class 4 team continue to wow us, and their opposition, dropping only a point so far in qualification. They face Naas at home today at 2pm, there is sure to be some fine tennis on display, and followed by an Ireland win in the rugby it should make for a great afternoon in the clubhouse! Many thanks to Gerry Ryan and Val Kerr for subbing once again this week, particularly Val who is travelling from Dunmore East to help clinch the point for us!

Our Sandycove 2, Class 3 team have a good chance of qualifying if they can beat Lansdowne away today. We have the inimitable Jacqui Lyons standing in this week and the team is determined to make it through!

All of our other teams are out of the running, but they have managed to stay in their classes for another season, no mean feat after the challenges posed by weather and last-minute cancellations. We are very proud of all our teams, and grateful to everyone who has travelled and given up their Sunday afternoons to represent our brilliant club. We’ll update you on all our playoff news as soon as possible!

Many thanks
Aileen and Fleur
