Our lady tennis members have been very busy of late – lots to update you on!
We had two wonderful teams compete in the Charity league, and BOTH teams made it to the semi finals!
Linda Vidal’s Class 4/5 Tuesday team were unlucky at home in the Semis and lost to Elm Park but can be very proud of a quality campaign. Warmest congrats to Sarah Beth Casey, Emma Percival, Ann Herbert, Joanne Morrissey , Fenella Murphy and Linda Vidal and their groupies (/subs!) – you did Sandycove proud. So committed are they to their sport, 2 of this fabulous team are now recovering from tennis injuries and we wish Fenella and Joanne a speedy recovery.
Pauline MacNamara captained the Monday non league team, and also did fantastically well. They played their Semi final away to Shankill but unfortunately came out the wrong side of it. They had a great run and to reach the Semis is a real achievement – well done to Paulline McNamara, Fiona Kelly, Margaret Brannigan, Aoife O’Gorman, Emma Taylor, and big thank you to Kathy Fulcher, Susan Grenneil, Grace Kilmartin & Caroline Grant who also played. Marianne McCaffrey was also named on the team but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury…
Summer League is progressing well.
We have 7 Sandycove Teams in the running, and the teams have travelled to the furthest corners of Leinster, in some seriously inclement weather (so much for ‘summer’ league!) to represent our great club.
Chloe Giacometti’s Class 2 team are flying with 7 points after the first 2 matches (David Lloyd 2 and Carrickmines 2). The ladies have a rest week this week to gather themselves ahead of Elm Park 1s at home on June 1st – a date for the diaries, promises to be a cracker!
Sandycove 2, Class 3, ably captained by Fleur Muldowney, have 6 points and 2 good wins – consistent – lets keep it going girls!
Sandycove 3, Class 3, with Linda Walsh at the helm, have a really tough draw. 2 points so far, but after the cracking display we were lucky enough to witness last week vs Greystones 1s we have every confidence there is more to come. Home again this week – Glasnevin 2 on Tuesday – come on down and support them!
SC 4, Class 4, marshalled by Ruth Milne, are worried about their carbon footprint – Skerries last week, and heading to Malahide on Tuesday! Well positioned with 5 points at this stage – their trip to Skerries well worth the (extortionate!) gas investment with a cracking 4-1 win.
SC 5, Class 5, is captained by Ellen O’Carroll got off to a stunning start against Malahide 8 with a 4-1 win, a trickier week last week against Terenure 2. . . . onwards ladies
SC 6, Class 5, are another team with a very difficult draw. Anna McGinley’s team have only 1 point in the bag so far, but Home tomorrow vs Portmarnock 4s, hopefully will see a reversal of fortunes
SC 7, Class 7, led by Siobhan Smyth, are another team with 2 consecutive 3-2 wins, sitting strong on 6 points, hoping to continue the pattern Vs Shankill this week.
We also have 2 teams representing us in the wonderful 5 Mile League on sundays.
Thanks to Mary Donohoe and Jean Hecksher-Doyle for taking the lead as captains of our 2 Teams, and best of luck this evening as they face into round 2.
Mary’s team secured a 3-0 victory last week, Jean’s team vs very tough opponents last week are looking to open their points tally this evening.
Finally, on the subject of ladies tennis, just to mention we have scaled back the courts for Wed morning Ladies morning for the time being. There has been very low turn out of late and it’s a shame to see courts unused when there is such demand for them, what with all these leagues putting pressure on courts at other times.
As you can see, LOTS going on!! Lovely to see the club happily engaged in inter club competitions again – thanks to all our brilliant teams for representing Sandycove so well.
Hope you enjoy the attached image of our club looking fab during a Summer League match recently.
Your captains,
Mandy and Jenny
