Ladies teams through to Winter League playoffs!
Well, after a surprisingly mild day weather-wise, we have two ladies teams through to the playoffs! Woohoo!
Hearty congratulations to Karen Johnson’s Class 4 team who have topped the poll and have earned a home tie next Sunday. This is an excellent team, and anyone who comes along to cheer them on in their quest for promotion next week is in for a treat.
Mairead Walsh’s Class 6 team made it a worthwhile journey to Naas, battling hard for three all-important points to nab second place in the tightest group of all time. Super Sub Extraordinaire Shelagh Cunningham and Nat “Nerves of Steel” Flanagan held firm at no. 1 doubles to clinch a win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 in dramatic style, defending a number of match points against them to turn things around. Mairéad Mackey and young Anna Quinn also maintained their cool, coming through 6-3, 0-6, 6-1, while the number three pair of Mairéad Walsh and Margaret Worrall also refused to be fazed, emerging victorious 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. It’s not easy to win a close three setter – as your chastened Class 3 compadres can attest – and the team thoroughly deserves its place against Meadowvale 2 next Sunday (away). Both teams will be promoted if they win, so let’s gather to cheer them on next Sunday March 1.
Thanks to everyone who played throughout the campaign so far; it has been trying at times but we’ve done really well to avoid relegations and get two teams through to the playoffs. Come on the ‘Cove!
