Sadly our Sandycove 3, Class 4 team was just pipped in their quarter final on Saturday morning. The heroine of the day, playing on Court 1 below a packed balcony, was young Meabh Moore. Having lost the first set, Queen Meabh came back to win the second 6-2 and then dug in deep to win the third in a nail-biting tiebreaker that was relayed live by Whatsapp all across Europe! What a champion she is, she didn’t lose one match all campaign, and even subbed up to Class 3 and won that as well. Congratulations Meabh, the older, greyer ladies are thrilled to have you on board!
Super-sub Helen Hughes was first to secure a point in her usual fine style, and she was followed by Meabh’s thrilling victory over a very fine and experienced player. Then it was all down to second doubles Val Kerr and Ashling Delaney, who valiantly fought to a third set but just couldn’t clinch the win in the end. What a fantastic campaign this team had: 22 out of 25 points in the round robins, and then securing promotion last Tuesday night. Well done all of you, you are utterly brilliant!
Our fabulous first team won through against Sutton 2 on Thursday and they will play tomorrow, Tuesday, at home in Sandycove at 7.30. They face an extremely strong Carrickmines side, with promotion to Class 1 up for grabs for the winner. All support is very welcome, let’s give the opposition a traditional Sandycove “welcome” and turn the balcony into an extra home player.
