WILLIAM FRY JUNIOR LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS OF IRELAND
The National Championships in Fitzwilliam took place last week and the standard was exceptionally high throughout all the age groups with the top players from all over the country(and abroad) competing for the top titles. We had a number of Sandycove players representing in different age groups which is an achievement in itself as it is not easy to even be accepted, such is the volume of entries and standard required. In the U16 Boys Singles, Will Fitzgerald came through qualifying superbly and was very unlucky not to make the quarter finals where he went down to the number 5 seed and very tricky opponent 6-3 in the 3rd set of his last 16 match. In the U18 Boys Doubles Oisin O’Hanlon and his partner also reached the last 16, but had an unfortunate draw coming up against the number 1 seeds and eventual finalists, giving them a good challenge, particularly in the 1st set where there was only one service break. Well done to Oisin, competing with the best, especially as he has been struggling with injuries of late. In the Boys U18 Singles, unseeded Ronan Sweeney reached the quarter finals having played an incredible match in the 2nd round, knocking out the number 2 seed(and full time player!) 6-1 6-2 with a flawless performance. The quarter final was a long and high quality battle, with Ronan unfortunately going down 6-4 6-4 to another Ulster player(the no.8 seed), showing just how high the level is of every round in Fitzwilliam.
Well done to everybody out competing over the glorious summer of 2018 and well done also to all our players who played in our own Sandycove Junior Open. There were some great matches on display throughout the tournament. Congratulations to everyone who entered and those who reached finals, winners and runners up!
