BROOKFIELD JUNIOR OPEN
Congratulations to Will Fitzgerald who got to the final of the Boys U16 Singles! This is a huge result for Will who flew through qualifying and took out the number 2 seed in the semi final with a convincing 6-2 6-1 victory, proving his talent and ability to compete at the highest level in his age group. Well done Will!
JUNIOR SOUTH OF IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIPS- LIMERICK
Congratulations to Mark Griffin who claimed the U18 Boys Singles title in Limerick, fighting through a tough semi final and claiming victory in the final 7-6 6-3 against a former Fitzwilliam singles winner! This is a big win for Mark with this tournament being a Category 1 and should give him plenty of confidence as we gear up for the summer season of tournaments. Well done to Mark!
Congratulations also to Mark and Oisin O’Hanlon on claiming the title in the U18 Boys Doubles! Well done to you both!
TEMPLEOGUE JUNIOR OPEN
I want to congratulate everyone who took part in the Templeogue Junior Open over the Easter. Sandycove had plenty of players throughout the age groups entering which is very promising to see. This is a National level tournament and the standard is as good as it gets in Ireland. In the U18 Boys, Ronan Sweeney got to the quarter finals losing a tight 6-4 6-4 battle to the number 1 seed and eventual winner. Well done to Ronan. With a better placed draw this could easily have been the final.
Liam Reynolds, Mark Griffin and Oisin O’Hanlon all had very tight matches against top level players and were unlucky not to progress further through the tournament. The difference in standard is very small from qualifying right through to finals so again, competing at this level is an achievement in itself and the boys should take lots of positives from the week. Will Fitzgerald also had a 3 set battle in his main draw match, but again came through qualifying, knocking out the number 1 seed 6-3 6-4 so yet another great performance from Will. Unfortunately due to the weather, all the plate events were cancelled as we had players at U12 and U14 level that I feel would have had a great shot at these titles.
Again, a big well done to all our Sandycove players out competing in the tournaments. Matchplay is invaluable and as they say, you win or you learn! It’s onwards and upwards for preparation for the Summer 2018 season. Remember the full list of tournaments is up on the outside notice boards or check out the tournament software link below.
If your child has reached quarter finals or better or any tournament, singles or doubles, please send through results to aineleonardtennis@gmail.com and I will include in the next report!
Kind Regards
