JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a challenging week in terms of weather, we made it to Finals Day on Saturday where thankfully we had much better conditions for the players and for our outdoor prize giving! I would just say a few thank yous to everyone who made the event possible and I apologise if I have forgotten anyone.

– To all the players and parents, thank you for supporting the Junior Championships. We had events from U8 red ball, all the way up to U18. A special thank you to those who played in the U16/U18 mixed doubles. It only took a little bit of bribing to get them to play, however in the end I think they all really enjoyed it. There was some great tennis on display and we are lucky to have them all in the club!

– Thank you to the assistants for helping out all summer, they were just brilliant and thank you to the umpires for helping on Finals Day- Roy Bailey, Conor O’Reilly, Jim O’Hanlon, Oisin O’Hanlon, Colin Grant..

– Thank you to our Junior Officer Anita Kane who has just been amazing and even on her holidays, has been working away organising the assistants all summer and all the prizes for the Junior Championships.

– Thank you to Club President Philip Bayfield for presenting the prizes on Finals Day and for his, and all the Committees support over the last few months.

– To the coaches, Rob Neiland and Catalin Iordan, thank you for all your work over the summer. Running the summer programme in the current climate came with its challenges, however, the team pulled together and we hope the kids enjoyed all the tennis and fun!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT FITZWILLIAM

Congratulations to Sarah White and Max Vidal who were involved in the 2020 William Fry National Championships at Fitzwilliam last week. There were only 24 players from the whole country allowed in to keep the event small so the fact that both players were involved in their 1st year in their age groups is an achievement in itself.

Sarah had a cracking match in the U12 Girls Singles against the number 11 in Ireland and came very close to winning with a scoreline of 6-4 7-6. Well done to Sarah on a superb performance!

In the U16 Boys Singles, again, only 24 players from the whole country were accepted into the draw. Max Vidal had a great win in the 1st round against the number 15 in Ireland, 7-5 6-3. In the 2nd round, he was unlucky to come up against the no.2 seed and eventual winner of the tournament.

A huge well done to you both!
