Senior League Finals – Sunday 19th October – Naas LTC
O55’s Class 1 – 10:00
Sandycove 1 v Fitzwilliam 1
1st Doubles: Brian O’Gorman (c)/Steve Gill
2nd Doubles: Ken Browne/Roy Bailey
3rd Doubles: Paul FitzGerald/Paul Kilduff
In atrocious conditions Brian O’Gorman’s team took to the courts at 10:00 to face a feared Fitzwilliam side. Mary and Cooper were well wrapped up and sheltering under umbrellas cheering them on from the sidelines.
With the matches underway the weather took a turn for the worse. Puddles formed on the courts and one of Fitzwilliam’s 2nd pair went down. His injury ws too severe and he couldn’t carry on. 1st point to Ken and Roy who were firmly in control of the 1st set with momentum on their side as they adapted well to the conditions.
Paul Kilduff and Paul Fitz were in a very tight match. Superb doubles matchplay from both sides made it a great game to watch but they were narrowly edged out in the 1st set. As the rain persisted and the balls got heavier and heavier, the second set got away from them.
1-1
Steve and Captain Brian were 1 set down but as the weather cleared briefly they stormed ahead in the second set. All to play for. The Fitzwilliam pair hung in there with them though and managed to catch back up ultimately closing out the 2nd set 6-4 and securing the trophy for Fitzwilliam.
An outstanding campaign for the team nonetheless and a pennant secured! Congratulations Men.
